About UDAI

A community-led movement, born from love and lived experience

UDAI Diabetes Awareness Initiative Society is a community-led nonprofit dedicated to children, adolescents and adults living with Type 1 Diabetes in Uttarakhand. What began as a small family support group in 2018 grew into a registered NGO in 2022, with an ever-growing support network across the state.

We believe no family should walk this journey alone. We bring awareness, education, insulin access advocacy and psychosocial support — wherever it is needed.

A small group of parents and patients in Uttarakhand come together to share stories, knowledge and hope.

2020

Coordinated emergency insulin and supplies for vulnerable T1D children during nationwide lockdowns.

2022

Officially Registered

UDAI is registered as an NGO — formalising our mission to support T1D families across the state.

Expanded to remote districts with awareness camps, school programs and rural insulin support.

Today

Understanding Type 1 Diabetes

Knowledge changes lives

Clear, evidence-based information to empower families, schools and communities.

What is Type-1 Diabetes?

An autoimmune condition where the body stops producing insulin. It is lifelong and not preventable.

Autoimmune Condition

The immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.

Lifelong Insulin

People with T1D need insulin every day — via injections or pumps — to stay alive.

Common Symptoms

Excessive thirst, frequent urination, sudden weight loss, fatigue and blurred vision.

Diagnosis

Confirmed through blood glucose tests, HbA1c and antibody panels by a qualified physician.

Daily Management

Insulin therapy, glucose monitoring, balanced nutrition and emotional well-being.

Five pillars of daily care

A holistic approach to living well with Type 1 Diabetes.

Challenges We Tackle

Reaching every corner of Uttarakhand

From the bustling plains of Dehradun to the remote villages of the Garhwal and Kumaon hills — UDAI is committed to closing the care gap for every child with Type 1 Diabetes.

Remote Mountain Regions
Families in the higher Himalayas often live hours from the nearest health centre.
Limited Specialists
Pediatric endocrinologists are concentrated in a few cities — leaving many districts under-served.
Insulin Access Gaps
Cold-chain logistics and affordability create life-threatening shortages.
Awareness Deficit
Misdiagnosis and stigma in schools and communities persist due to lack of information.
